Gap Year
Nowadays, there is a phenomenon in some countries, especially
in some developed countries, that is some students choose to take off
a year between the ending of high school and the beginning of
enrollment of university. It offers a opportunity for students to have
enough time to have a good preparation for their new life and do lots
of things which are necessary and important for them. So the
carry-out of this policy brings a lot of advantages to students and
some other sides. Now this phenomenon will be analysed from the
following aspects.
Firstly, it offers a period of time to let students have a rest from
the high stressed high school life. For some students from rich
family , they can take this chance to travel to broaden their mind
which is also served as a kind of learning; on the other hand, some
students who are from not rich family can make great use of this
year to make some tuition fees for their study. They are both a kind
of relaxation from heavy study to some degree, and at the meantime,
students can get what they need. It is meaningful and impressive for
students at this age since they can know a lot about the world and
society which will influence them very much.
It is also said that it wastes time because students can learn
more knowledge at university and perhaps students will forget what
they learnt at high school if they don't learn continuously during the
year. However, they forget that broadening minds and making
money in society are also kinds of learning which may be more
vivid 、significant and practical than what they get at school. What's
more, the so-called knowledge that will be forgotten only after a
year if students don't study it continuously is so fragile and
unpractical that be questioned the true significance of learning it.
And it seems that it doesn't have an inevitable relation with taking
Gap Year. In some people's view, they think students will be effected
by some bad environment and atmosphere in the year that they do
not be at school or university. But for the students who choose to
take a gap year, they know what they want to do and what they will
to do instead of addicting some not good things.
Secondly, students can have a better understanding about the
society and about what they want to be. It is known that there is
difference between school and society and between jobs people
imagine and real ones. It is a common phenomenon that some
students don't know that they don't like it and the major they choose
at first don't fit themselves until know what it really is after a period
of study. It is a pity since it is not easy to begin anew. So the Gap
Year offers a opportunity for students to know more about
themselves、the job they imagine、the society and the world. It may
help students to realize what they want to do in their career or at
universities, plus they will have time to think about what they want
to achieve. For example, students have interests in some field or a
certain job and they can go to that field or that job as volunteers for
knowing more about the field and job to test whether they really like
it and whether they should set it as own goal or not. So it doesn't
waste time but save time to some extent. And it is not an obligatory
choice, so if you are very clearly and certainly know yourself and
what you want,then you can choose not. But for most students, they
can't make sure about it and it is necessary for them.
Thirdly, students can gain wider experience and learn how to
live independently which are very important for students through
traveling to expend their horizons、working as volunteers 、making
some money and some other ways during the year. They are the
knowledge that can't be learnt in books. What's more, the knowledge
can contribute to students growth, because the comparative rich
experience will help students know more about life、the relationship
in people and the life in university, and the ability of independence
also can help students live alone, which are important for students
